The Miniencyclopedia of the Páramo in England
Author of La Minienciclopedia del Páramo, Diana L. A. Vásquez, presenting the book at the EvoKE meeting this year in Bath, England
On the 3rd of July, we presented our project at the EvoKE meeting in Bath, England. Evolutionary Knowledge for Everyone, EvoKE, is an international community that seeks to contribute to an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future by promoting the wider use of scientific and evolutionary knowledge in education and policy-making. EvoKE meetings are held every two years to bring together evolutionary biologists, education researchers, teachers, journalists, museum professionals, science-communicators, artists, designers and citizen science organizations with the aim to foster collaborative projects that will increase citizens’ scientific literacy.
Workshop led by Tiffany Taylor and Jonathan Tweet on how to create science literature for a young audience
At the meeting, we had the opportunity to discuss our project with other researches and with experts in science-communication. We met Jonathan Tweet, the author of the first book about evolution addressed to preschool children and, Tiffany Taylor, an evolutionary scientist and author of two science books for children. With them, we learned about creating children’s literature and introducing evolutionary concepts to a young audience. Jonathan and Tiffany led an amazing workshop, where we went through the best children’s science books published recently in the UK. Based on them, we discussed what to do and what to avoid, when creating science books for childrens. We could also gain insights from different outreach and educational projects led by the participants of the workshop. We joined also other two workshops, where we learned storytelling practices and the use of digital media in science communication. We also attended several exciting talks by experts in science outreach and communication, such as Joana Moscoso and Adam Rutherford.

We are extremely grateful to the board of EvoKE for facilitating our participation by granting us a reduction in the meeting fee. We came back home with a suitcase full of practical advices that we are now implementing in the production of our book “La minienciclopedia del Páramo”. We got also very helpful advice from experienced researchers and organization on how to optimally run our project to increase its social impact and we gather a lot of new inspiration from other researchers, educators and communicators.
